Drupal vs Everything else i've ever used
The verdict is still not in on how I place Drupal on the list of content management systems i've used in the past.
This program compared to everything else i've ever written or used is just strange, will it grow on me? Most likely, after I plug away at it some more and build some sample sites on it. I think I am going to use Drupal as the platform to build my fathers website for his machine shop.
Main complaints with Drupal?
- Taxonomy! I have no respect for taxonomy, it makes little sense to me why it is setup the way it is. I know it has a purpose, and eventually it will grow on me. For now however I find it horrible ( sorry taxonomy devs )
- Text entry.. It seems the default text editor for Drupal does little to no formatting of blog/page entries. They all come out flowing together looking like complete crap. I installed a wysiwyg editor to compensate, just to realize is still does nothing. I have to manually go through and change the div's it tosses in to paragraph tags which actually work.
Likes of Drupal?
- Super easy installer
- The flow of the admin side is ok.
- Templating is ok, i've cussed it a few times but aside from that it's ok.
- Module development doesn't appear to be too bad, now if only someone would tell me something to try to build :)
I think overall Drupal will be a positive experience for me, i'm just whining since i'm not used to having to conform to another programmers program since I normally write my own CMS. I think developing for Drupal will help improve my team work, and help me keep my code clean and organized and well documented. However, I think it will take me longer to pick up every aspect of programming for drupal since it's not what i'm used to.
I'll figure it out, there will undoubtably be tons of various curse words slipping from my mouth in every encounter with Drupal during my learning process, but it's ok!
